How to Keep a Bouquet Fresh for Longer

Cream roses luxury bouquet - The Petal Studio Chandigarh

You have just received a beautiful bouquet, or you are about to send one. Naturally, you want those flowers to look just as fresh on day seven as they did on day one. The good news is that keeping a bouquet fresh is not complicated. With a few simple habits, most fresh-cut flowers from The Petal Studio stay vibrant for a week or longer. In this guide, our florists in Chandigarh share exactly what they do to make flowers last.

Why cut flowers wilt in the first place

Once a flower is cut, it can no longer draw water from its roots. Instead, it drinks through the open end of its stem. Three things cut that supply short. First, the stem end dries out and seals itself within an hour or two of being out of water. Second, bacteria grow in the vase water and clog the stem. Third, heat and dry air make petals lose moisture faster than the stem can replace it. Almost every tip below simply fixes one of these three problems.

Step 1: Unwrap and trim the stems straight away

When your bouquet arrives, remove the wrapping and any rubber bands around the stems. Then, using a sharp knife or clean scissors, cut about 2 cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45 degree angle. The angled cut exposes more of the stem to water, and it stops the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase. If you can, make the cut under running water or in a bowl of water. That way, no air bubble gets trapped in the stem.

Avoid blunt kitchen scissors if possible. Blunt blades crush the tiny channels inside the stem, and crushed stems drink far less water.

Step 2: Use a clean vase and fresh water

A vase that looks clean can still carry bacteria from the last bouquet. So wash it with warm soapy water, rinse it well, and fill it two-thirds full with clean, room-temperature water. Most flowers, including roses, lilies and carnations, prefer water that is neither ice-cold nor warm.

If your bouquet came with a sachet of flower food, stir it in. Flower food contains sugar for energy, a mild acid to help stems absorb water, and an agent that slows bacteria. If you do not have a sachet, fresh water changed often works well too.

Step 3: Remove leaves below the waterline

Any leaf that sits under water will rot within a day or two, and rotting leaves feed bacteria. Therefore, strip off every leaf that would sit below the water level. Keep the leaves above the water, because they help the flower look full and natural. For roses, you can also gently remove the outer one or two “guard petals” if they look bruised. Florists leave them on during transport to protect the bloom.

Step 4: Choose the right spot in your home

Where you place the vase matters more than most people think. Flowers last longest in a cool, bright spot away from direct sunlight. In addition, keep them away from:

  • Air conditioner and heater vents, which dry petals out quickly
  • Televisions, refrigerators and other appliances that give off heat
  • Bowls of ripening fruit, which release ethylene gas that makes flowers age faster
  • Sunny windowsills, especially during Chandigarh summers

At night, you can even move the vase to the coolest room in the house. This small habit can add two or three extra days to your bouquet.

Step 5: Change the water every two days

Cloudy water is a sign that bacteria are growing. Every second day, pour out the old water, rinse the vase, and refill it with fresh water. At the same time, trim another centimetre off each stem. As a result, the stems stay open and keep drinking properly.

Care tips for popular flowers

Roses

Roses are thirsty. Check the water level every day, because a full bouquet can drink a surprising amount overnight. If a rose head starts to droop, re-cut the stem under water and let it sit in deep water for an hour. Often, it will perk back up.

Lilies

Lilies open over several days, so do not worry if some buds are still closed. As each flower opens, gently pull off the orange pollen anthers with a tissue. This prevents stains on petals, clothes and tablecloths, and the flower lasts longer too.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers have heavy heads and thick stems. Give them a tall, sturdy vase and plenty of water. Also, remove any leaves that touch the water, because sunflower leaves spoil quickly.

Orchids and chrysanthemums

Both are naturally long-lasting. Keep the water fresh and they can easily stay beautiful for ten days or more.

What about bouquets with chocolates, teddies or balloons?

Many of our gift bouquets combine flowers with chocolates, soft toys or balloons. In that case, separate the extras first. Store chocolates in a cool, dry place, and move the flowers into a vase following the steps above. Balloons last longest indoors, away from sharp edges and direct heat.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving the bouquet in its wrapping for a day before putting it in water
  • Topping up old water instead of replacing it
  • Placing flowers next to a fruit bowl
  • Squeezing too many stems into a narrow vase, which crushes the stems
  • Using a metal vase for certain flowers, since some metals react with flower food

How long should a bouquet last?

With good care, you can expect roses to last five to seven days, lilies and orchids seven to ten days, carnations and chrysanthemums up to two weeks, and sunflowers around a week. Of course, the freshness at delivery matters just as much. That is why every bouquet at The Petal Studio is made to order on the day of delivery rather than stored in advance.
